    Which world

Be born into today’s world and live with today’s statistics.

    How your country is chosen

“Babies” weights countries by annual births; “8 billion” by share of population. Either way, life starts at age 0.

    Time for one life

Roughly how long it takes to reach the country’s life expectancy. You can pause or speed up at any time.

If chosen, we compare the life you’re given with your own starting point. Stored only on this device.

Select “Be born” to see your starting point. The defaults work too.

Heavy events — illness, death, accidents, violence — happen according to statistics. Scenes are never depicted.

For ages 15+ · includes drinking, smoking, romance and marriage

The basic life simulation is free from birth to its ending. No account or sign-in needed.

    The people in this simulation

Totals will appear here once lives are shared.

    Born in the same second

In the very second you are born, other babies arrive all over the world. Four of them follow the same statistics and are shown alongside your life.

    A pause

At 5, 15, 30, 50 and 70, time stops and a question arrives. Hold this life up against your own, and if you like, leave a single line.

What you can and can’t choose

From age 6 you choose what to focus on each year. School, work, love, moving abroad and treatment bring decisions. Choices change a life, but it is hard to fully escape the conditions of where you were born. If you’d rather watch, turn on “Auto”.

    What is based on data

Births by country, life expectancy by sex, under-5 mortality, GDP per capita (PPP), income inequality, years of schooling, tertiary enrolment, agricultural employment, fertility, homicide rates and life satisfaction. Timing of death follows a life table per country and sex; causes follow broad age and regional patterns. Values are rounded and simplified for play.

    Who makes this

An independent maker building a life simulation together with AI. It’s in beta — feedback and ideas are very welcome.

How to play 80億分之一: common questions

Learn how 80億分之一 works, which languages it supports, what is free and how progress is saved.

What kind of game is 80億分之一?

80億分之一 is a free browser life simulation game. Start in a randomly assigned country and family, follow text events, and make choices about school, work and relationships. At the end, look back on the life you lived.

How do I start? Can I choose my country of birth?

Choose a birth method and pace on this page, select “Be born” to see your background, then “Start this life”. The default settings work too. Your country and family are random; the optional country you were actually born in is only used for comparison. From age 6, choose an annual focus and respond to decisions as they appear.

Is the game available in Traditional and Simplified Chinese?

Yes. Use the language buttons at the top of the page to choose Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English or Japanese. The game interface, event text and choices use your selected language. You can then start directly on this page.

Do I need to pay or create an account to play 80億分之一?

The basic life simulation is free from birth to its ending. You do not need to register, sign in or buy a plan to start. Select “Be born” on the homepage to begin.

Can I play on a phone or computer? Do I need an app?

You can play on a phone or computer in a modern browser, without downloading an app or installing an extension. JavaScript must be enabled. To continue a life later, your browser also needs to allow this site to save data.

How long does one life take? Can I pause or speed up?

Choose a pace of about 30, 60 or 90 minutes before starting. This estimates the time to reach the birth country’s life expectancy, rather than a fixed session length. Actual time depends on lifespan, pauses and how long you spend making choices. You can pause, speed up, skip to the next decision or enable “Auto”.

Can I save my progress and continue later?

Yes. Progress during a life is saved automatically in the current browser. Return on the same device and browser and select “Continue this life”. In-progress lives do not automatically sync across devices; clearing site data or closing a private browsing window may remove your save. Choosing “Quit” discards progress. At the end of a life, you can copy a summary or choose to share it in the memorial.

Can my choices change the ending?

Choices affect health, happiness, knowledge, relationships and later events, alongside starting conditions and chance. No option guarantees success, and wealth or lifespan need not be your only goal. Try different choices and look back on how they shaped the story.

Do birth chances and life events exactly match the real world?

No. Depending on the selected birth method, countries are weighted by births or population within the game’s dataset. Some figures are approximate, and events and life paths are simplified for gameplay. Results cannot predict a real person’s lifespan, income or future.

Who is the game for? Is there an age recommendation?

The game is for players who enjoy life simulations, interactive text and random stories, and is recommended for ages 15 and up. It includes illness, death, accidents and family relationships in non-graphic text. Before starting, you can also choose to tone down difficult descriptions.
