How to make choices in 1 in 8 Billion
Understand yearly focus, education, health and work tradeoffs in this browser edition.
Start with your character, not a winning route
This guide describes the independent 80億分之一.com edition, checked on 23 October 2026. Other 1 in 8 Billion games may use different rules. Read the beginner’s guide if you have not started a life yet.
Choose what you want to explore: education, relationships, financial stability or a quieter life. Read the character’s age, school or work situation, family and attributes before acting. The same focus is not equally useful at every stage.
What does a yearly focus actually do?
The following are direct focus effects in the current rules, before aging, events and other annual adjustments. They are not guaranteed net changes to the displayed values, which are bounded between 0 and 100.
| Focus | Direct effect |
|---|---|
| Study | Knowledge +3, happiness −1, relationships −1 |
| Friends | Relationships +3, happiness +1, knowledge −1 |
| Health | Health +3 |
| Family | Happiness +2, relationships +1 |
| Work | Happiness −1, health −1; an additional income multiplier of 1.04 when employed and not retired |
| Love | Happiness +1; also affects a relationship-event chance |
| Rest | Happiness +3, health +1, knowledge −1 |
Options depend on life stage and begin at age six. For example, low knowledge before an education decision can make study worth considering, while falling health can make a period of health or rest more useful than continued work. Read the next year’s events to understand changes rather than expecting a single button to control every outcome.
Should a poor character study or work?
At the age-15 school decision, continuing education can still fail because of the household’s resources and country conditions. Work leaves school and provides an immediate game benefit; vocational training follows a different education path. These are tradeoffs, not a universal ranking.
At the university decision, knowledge, household wealth and the country’s tertiary-education input affect admission probability. A study focus helps one input but cannot remove all uncertainty. An unsuccessful application is a simulated event, not a judgment about a real person’s ability.
How can I improve income without ignoring everything else?
For an employed, non-retired character, work focus boosts annual income growth but reduces health and happiness directly. Some jobs can also receive a promotion after sufficient experience and knowledge; the event remains random. A work focus can expose an eligible adult to a burnout event. Check health and relationships periodically rather than leaving work on for an entire life. This guide describes game mechanics, not real financial advice.
Why can a healthy character die early?
The engine first obtains a baseline age-specific risk. From age five, health changes that risk; illness can raise it. Better health does not make the baseline risk zero. No sequence of choices guarantees a long life. The curve itself is a simplified game model; see data and methodology.
A practical way to review a decision
Pause, read the offered options, choose a priority, and check the actual result. Compare several lives for curiosity, but do not treat different starting countries and random events as a controlled experiment. Auto selects for you and is useful for watching; it is not an optimal-strategy solver.
At the ending, look at milestones, relationships and happiness as well as age and money. Keep a local recap or publish a fictional story if you wish. Start another life or read how this game compares with BitLife.
